A Guide on Cycling Safely on the Road
It can be an exciting thought to know you have just bought your new bike. It is even more exciting to ride to all the places that you know. But the problem is, you have to ride on roads. Roads as everyone knows it, require the users to abide by the road laws.
Sure, you could think you are free to cycle to anywhere you want to. The problem is, there are other road vehicles who are also using the road. In fact, accidents happening on the road involving cyclists also often involves other road vehicles. One good tip is to avoid roads with obvious dangers.
You should always avoid roads with blind corners and short-width shoulders. Instead, you could opt for roads that are rarely used by people. Old roads can be a good example of this. Coastal or rural roads can be great too. But consider the quality of the road too as well. You do not want to ride on bumpy conditions all the time, do you?
As a cyclist, you should be wary of lorries or these big vehicles on the road. It is harder for them to see you. They also hold very big responsibilities like carrying a ton of timber. A solution as a cyclist is to ride aggressively. But note that this might not be true at all times.
In some cases, you do need to take more command of the road. In other cases, it is better to remain "invisible" and go with the flow. This is especially true when riding with roads that contain traffic lights. A good example of this is the city area. Other than four-wheeled vehicles on the road, you will be facing other two-wheeled ones as well.
Motorcycles can be a nuisance to you. This is because they might be in your way or blocking your path in front of you. You will also have to deal with the carbon monoxide being emitted from its exhaust! There are two things you can do. You could speed your way through and overtake him. The other choice is to let the motorcyclist speed ahead. This is done by slowing down the bike on your part.
The number one reason for bike accidents is that many people cannot seem to see bicycles on the road. This is because in some countries, bicycles can rarely be seen on the road. That is why other vehicle operators will claim they did not see a cyclist when an accident happens! Their brain simply did not register you exist even though they had already seen you!
So, as a cyclist, you have to take responsibilities by making sure you are noticeable. You should wear cycling jerseys that can illuminate in the dark and purchase extra bicycle lamps or lights. It is never a good idea to ride with black jersey and cycling shorts with no lights at night.
You should also check with the road laws. Abide by them like how a motorcyclist rides his bike according to the road laws. As a final tip, you should not go against the traffic. Always try to cycle in a single file whenever possible. Cyclists have been known to cycle side by side and while this may seem fun at first, it is actually very dangerous to do. You will be taking up more space and reducing the width of the road when doing so.
