Is it wise to pitch an idea with a provisional patent?
Will businesses take you seriously with a provisional patent?
I know some companies prefer it over a full utility patent, but is this the norm?

There is no such thing as a provisional patent. There are only provisional patent APPLICATIONS. You have to file a regular utility patent application within 1 year of the filing of a provisional application for the provisional to do you any good at all (it gets you an earlier filing date if you don't make any undocumented (in the provisional application) improvements.
I'd wait until I had the actual patent. Why give anyone a head start on working around your patent? Also, if you don't have a patent....they don't have any reason to pay you.
